5 Basic Rules of Lawn Care

Cutting a lawn too short, also known as “scalping,” is unhealthy for the lawn.

Most homeowners want to ensure that their lawns look great year round. However, many do not know how to address the ongoing health of their lawns. While watering and mowing a lawn is good for maintenance, some bad practices have become common too. Below are the top 5 things homeowners should keep in mind when it comes to their lawn care.

Keep your lawn at a healthy length

Cutting a lawn too short, also known as “scalping,” is unhealthy for the lawn. If blades of grass are cut too short, the stem is left exposed. This makes it difficult for a lawn to build deep root structures, and the soil will dry out fast with no leaves to shade it from the sun.

Leave grass clippings on the lawn

If a hole has developed in the lawn mower bag, don’t rush to buy a replacement. Instead, let grass clippings fall back onto the lawn. The clippings will provide nutrients for growth, and help keep moisture in the soil.

Only mow dry grass

Mowing wet grass is never a good idea. Not only can it damage lawn mower blades, it can also become a tripping hazard to those who are walking on wet grass. Additionally, mowing a wet lawn makes the grass more susceptible to disease.

Use fertilizer carefully

Over-fertilizing is a real risk. Adding too much fertilizer can turn a lawn brown, due to the nitrogen found in most fertilizers. However, not fertilizing at all can also result in a dead lawn. Homeowners should know the best time of year to fertilize, and how often.

Water precisely

Lawns do not need to be watered daily, even in the summer. Instead, aim to water 1-2 times per week. Water the lawn for extended periods of time only in the early morning or evening when the sun is not at its peak. It also may be beneficial to have a professional install a rain sensor and sprinkler timer to simplify watering schedules for sprinkler systems. These steps ensure the grass gets adequate hydration without water waste.
