Quick Tips for Sprinkler Repair

Over time, almost everything needs repair or replacement; sprinkler system parts are no different. Functioning sprinklers that used to evenly distribute water across grass may now leave parts of the lawn looking dry. In many cases, broken sprinkler systems need professional repairs. However, homeowners can do several basic repairs on their own. Below are three easy sprinkler repair tips.

Cleaning out sprinkler heads

Cause: If sprinkler heads no longer spray evenly, stay up after completing a watering cycle, or rise but don't spray, they may need cleaning to return to optimal functioning. Over time, dirt and debris can build up. Luckily, there is a quick and cost effective fix–cleaning the sprinkler heads.

Tip

  • Dig around the head (if needed) and remove it from the riser.

  • While holding the base, unscrew the head to take it apart. The filter screen inside will likely be dirty.

  • Remove the screen and wash it in a bowl of water.

  • Rinse the rest of the head with water.

  • Reassemble and check performance. If it still doesn't work, the head needs replacement.

Low Water Pressure

Cause: If sprinklers are spraying with low pressure or not rising at all, there may be an issue with the flow control at the backflow device.

Tip: Check the valves to make sure they are open. The valves on both the horizontal and vertical pipes need to be checked, making sure that both valves to their open positions.

Broken or worn out sprinkler head

Cause: Uneven spray patterns or flow may mean that the sprinkler head is broken. Look for cracks in the plastic or a completely missing sprinkler head.

Tip:

  • Dig around the sprinkler head (if needed), and unscrew it from the riser.

  • Clean out any broken debris that may be left within the riser.

  • Connect a new sprinkler head to the riser and twist it tightly into place.

Following these straightforward tips can resolve many common sprinkler issues without professional help. But if problems persist, call the experts.
